If you hear someone say that to you, you’ll be like "uh? why would I want to do that? you think I’m stupid?"
Well, as the social network is growing everyday and more and more people are using those services, they are handling over all or some of their private information for other (websites/companies) to manage their privacy.
I love to talk about psychology or philosophy and talk about everyday issues, but this is far more interesting than that right now. As an adult, most people are able to make common sense and make decision accordingly. Some are just too stupid to do that, but that’s not the point. Most parents are too busy working to make end meet or trying to provide a family a more comfortable living condition as everything go up faster than you say "inflation". So they don’t really have time to talk to their kids about the dangerous of the internet. It’s not just about your identity about to get stolen and misused anymore. It’s your identity being oversee by everyone else – friends, acquaintances, family, thieves, HR (the person who about to hire you, and do your background check). As this moment, search engine company like Google is developing a facial recognition technology, so whatever you uploaded on the internet, posted on the internet, very soon they all tie to you name, so if you search for your name, they will have everything listed. Isn’t crazy?
So 10 years from now, those kids that are having fun and being cool creating their social network profiles on those websites, they will be so regret then when it comes back to haunt them. On the side thought, being a parents is such a tough task.
So If someone ask you to hand over your private information, so they can manage it, you would have to question yourself if you have already done it or not.
Update #1: I attempted to chat with my younger cousin about this issue, and she ignored and laughed about the idea as any 14 years old would do. Well, I was once like that, too, so nothing unfamiliar there. She probably won’t remember anything I told her in 2 hours, and I was right – she couldn’t repeat it back to the other cousin what I told her just 5 minutes ago.
Update #2: advertisement billboard to get camera install to detect people’s face and change it on the fly – profiling. via Engadget.
Update #3: My cousin just called me and told me that she’s only 11. ![]()
So I have to correct her age. She does sounded angry and called me ‘evil’. It was little funny that she found my blog website after 4 days of searching through the web. She also told me that she does remember what I told her, but it was just weird to repeat it back in front of me. I am glad that she remembers, but the question remains to be ask if she would be one of the young teenager whom ignore my message and post her information everywhere on the web.
